The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced a major update that will impact many immigrants who rely on Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) to work in the United States. Starting October 30, 2025, DHS will end the automatic extension of work permits for individuals filing renewal applications in most categories.
This means that after this date, when you apply to renew your EAD, it will no longer be automatically extended while your renewal is pending—unless your case qualifies under limited exceptions, such as Temporary Protected Status (TPS) extensions authorized by law or specific Federal Register notices.
According to DHS, the goal of this new rule is to strengthen vetting and security measures by reviewing applicants’ backgrounds more frequently. However, this also means timing and preparation will become even more important to avoid lapses in your work authorization.
Who Is Affected
This new rule applies to individuals in most EAD categories, including those with pending green card, asylum, or certain temporary protected status (TPS) applications. However, there are a few exceptions, such as:
- Automatic extensions that are granted by law, and
- TPS-related extensions specifically provided through a Federal Register notice.
If you received an automatic extension before Oct. 30, 2025, this new rule does not affect you.

- File early: USCIS recommends submitting your EAD renewal application up to 180 days before your current card expires.
- Stay updated: Rules and exceptions can change, so check for updates on the USCIS Employment Authorization page or consult a trusted immigration attorney.
