Client Spotlight: Navigating Love and Law – Alba’s Marriage Visa Journey

July 27, 20243 min read

In a recent video shared with our community, Alba Porras, a wellness practitioner from Mexico with over 15 years of experience, recounts her heartfelt journey of obtaining a marriage visa with the help of our law firm. Alba, a skilled mental health counselor, kinesiologist, and yoga teacher, shares both the challenges and joys she faced while navigating the U.S. immigration system with her spouse.

A Friendship Turned Partnership

Alba and Daven first met in 2009 as international students at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. This friendship evolved into a professional partnership when Alba sought Daven’s expertise to navigate her immigration journey years later.

The Immigration Journey

Before applying for her green card, Alba faced significant challenges, including uncertainty and the complexities of the U.S. immigration system. Under her F1 International Student Visa, she had Optional Practical Training (OPT), a one-year work authorization available after completing a program of study, which provided her with some breathing room. However, figuring out the next steps was daunting. Alba and her husband had to decide between pursuing a work visa or a marriage-based visa, each with its own implications for her ability to work and travel. The decision-making process was nerve-wracking, compounded by the intricate requirements and potential consequences of each option. These obstacles underscored the importance of having clear guidance and support during such a complex process. Ultimately, they chose the marriage-based visa as the most secure path to establishing her status in the U.S.

Alba’s Love Story

Alba initially came to the U.S. with a clear plan: “I wanted to come and study, get my master’s degree, and then go back and grow my business.” However, during her studies, Alba met her future husband. Their unexpected love story unfolded despite the challenges of living in different cities, illustrating the serendipity of finding love when least expected. When asked what the secret to finding love was, Alba said, “Love often finds you when you’re not looking for it.” Sometimes the most significant life changes come when you least anticipate them.

Navigating the Green Card Process

Alba describes the green card process as the hardest stage of her life. The uncertainty and the requirement to stay in the U.S. meant she was unable to travel to Mexico for health treatments and to see her family. During this challenging time, she relied heavily on the unwavering support of her husband and the expertise of our law firm.

The journey was filled with anxiety, particularly when they received a Request For Evidence (RFE), requiring them to submit additional documentation to support her application. We submitted over 750 pages of evidence in total, a demanding but crucial effort for the success of her case. The relief and joy of receiving her green card approval marked a significant milestone, providing her with a newfound sense of security and belonging in the United States.

Life After the Green Card

With her green card secured, Alba’s life transformed significantly. She was able to travel freely, reconnect with her family, and start her online business, Wellzense. Her business focuses on helping women manage chronic health symptoms through yoga, mindfulness, and somatic practices, emphasizing holistic well-being.

Wellzense can be found online at wellzensehub.com and on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube under the handle @wellzense. Alba also hosts the “Inspira Podcast by Wellzense,” available on Spotify and Apple Podcast, where she explores various topics related to wellness and personal growth.

Advice for Others

Reflecting on her journey, Alba advises anyone navigating the immigration process to seek professional legal advice and maintain a strong support network. She emphasizes the importance of staying connected with loved ones and prioritizing personal well-being, recognizing that the emotional and practical challenges of immigration can be overwhelming.

Alba’s story is a testament to resilience, the power of community, and the critical role of professional support in navigating life’s significant transitions. Her journey from international student to wellness entrepreneur in the U.S. serves as an inspiring example of how challenges can lead to new opportunities and growth.
