In a major announcement, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) revealed that it has initiated removal (deportation) proceedings against more than 26,000 individuals since February 2024. These actions come as part of USCIS’s increased enforcement of immigration laws — and it’s a wake-up call for many immigrants in the U.S.
What Does This Mean?
If you’ve applied or plan to apply for an immigration benefit like a green card, asylum, or a work permit, and your application is denied, you could now face removal proceedings in immigration court.
Even small errors, outdated information, or missing documents could trigger a Notice to Appear (NTA), which is the first step toward deportation. And for many families, this creates immediate fear and confusion.
Who is being affected?
According to USCIS, many of these NTAs were issued after applications were denied. This includes individuals who:
- Overstayed their visas
- Filed applications without legal eligibility
- Had past criminal issues or unresolved immigration violations
Why having an experienced Immigration Attorney matters
If you’re undocumented, have a pending application, or fear your case may be denied, this is not the time to go through the process alone. This policy change makes one thing clear: you should never go through the immigration process alone. An experienced immigration attorney can help you:
- Avoid mistakes that could lead to denial or removal
- Prepare a strong application with supporting evidence
- Respond quickly if you receive a Notice to Appear
- Defend your rights in immigration court if needed
- Identify other legal pathways (like asylum, VAWA, or cancellation of removal)
The difference between staying in the U.S. and facing removal often comes down to legal strategy and timing. A single missed deadline or incorrect form can have life-changing consequences.
Don’t wait for a denial to take action.
